“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2
As homeschoolers we often get asked the same annoying questions. I get asked if Tirian has “finished school” because he is 17 and the system of the world says he should be in Matric and then go off to University to study but I do not live according to the pattern of the world. I trust in God to lead me and my children in the way we should go.
” I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Psalm 32:8
Firstly I do not do “School at home” , we have a learning lifestyle, We do basic language and Math and they learn as their interests lead. This creates a love for learning instead of regurgitating facts just for the sake of a test only to forget what you have learned a few years down the line. In homeschool circles we are referred to as “unschoolers” due to the fact that we do not conform to institutionalized schooling.I do not have to live under pressure of standardized testing as I believe each person is unique and cannot be all held to one level/grade or standard . It is the same with the baby percentile chart. No baby is the same!It is ridiculous to think that just because you baby is in the lower percentile according to the chart that there is something wrong with them. Some babies just develop differently! My children do not have to finish at a particular age either. They can ‘’finish” at any age. There is no rush. Tirian is currently working and doing an apprenticeship , doing lazer cutting and learning some graphic design skills. He will probably study graphic design as this is his interest. He can go straight to do an online graphic design course if he wants, there is no need for him to do a matric which in my opinion is of no value to him. He found his interest and passion. He is gaining experience and learning skills. This is the path the God as laid out for us.
I also get asked “What do they want to do when the grow up?” and I always answer, “ It is not what they want, It is what God wants”
“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:14-15
My other son Ethan is 15 and has always had a passion for food and cooking , so I have nurtured that and sent him on a few courses. Encouraged him to try out new recipes and let him make a mess in the kitchen. Ethan is Aspergers or now known as Autism Spectrum Disorder and he is Dyslexic. If he was in School he would have been sent to OT, extra classes, psychologists, he would be under so much unnecessary pressure to conform to this man made system and standard when he is thriving in the calling that God has prepared for him. I can find short cooking courses for him and he can learn from you tube tutorials. He is currently very involved in our church with the cooking at the many events that are held there. These are all doors that God has just opened up for him. I rely fully on God.
Who knows? Maybe my younger son Jonathan will have a landscaping business, start a dog rescue shelter or he could study to be a lawyer.I do not know the answer to that one yet but God knows the answer! All I can do is trust in Him!
